Effects of Computers
Today
we depend on computers more than ever on any machine in the past. We
rely on computers for our topfincial information, for security, for
getting food, and for so many other things. If all computers were to
stop working at the same time, we would not be able to get along.
Because of this, there was quite a scare when the start of the 21st century came about. Due to the way that dates on electronics are usually stored, there was much worry that many computers would stop working when the year 2000 came around. This scare is now called y2k (an abbreviation for year two thousand). The media convinced people to stock up on essentials in the event that we would not be able to buy products anymore.
This fiasco shows how much our society truly needs computers to keep on. Daily, systems previously ran by simpler methods now depend on computers. For instance, databases have been replaced by computers. Documents previously kept on paper are now being computerized. Messages are now being sent via e-mail instead of "snail mail" as legacy postal services are now referred to as. If we were to loose all of these things, our society would not be able to survive.
Although computers in their current form have not been out but for half a century at most, our society in America is very dependent on them. Computers are crucial to our everyday lives.
