Charles Babbage was quite competent in mathematics from a young age. In his youth, he was able to teach himself Algebra. By the time he entered university at Trinity College, he found that he mathematical abilities had far surpassed that of his tutors. After graduating, Babbage immediately began to teach at the university. He also founded the Analytical Society for promoting continental mathematics.

Later Charles Babbage played a major part in the founding of an astronomy foundation. It was about this time that he developed his interest in "calculating machinery" that was his main interest for the remainder of his life. He went on to create the Analytical Engine.
